Hamilton

Hamilton: An Online Musical is a completely virtual production of the award-winning musical, Hamilton.

The original concept was for it to be a virtual concert, with no actual costumes or elaborate backgrounds and scenes. However, Sadie Kate Gibson, who was going to direct and edit the whole thing, realized that if she bought green screens for the cast members to borrow when recording their songs, it could be more similar to a movie rather than a virtual concert, which there had been many of at the time. Four green screens were purchased in order to allow multiple people to use them at once instead of only one person recording at a time. (At the end of filming, each of the green screens ended up with Sadie Kate Gibson, Jason Wells, Cooper Ogden, and Kait Adams.)

On July 21st, 2020, production officially began. The cast went through many changes through the course of it, but there were some roles that always remained the same. Six of the cast members actually played multiple roles, but only two of them played the ones that were doubled in all other versions of the show (those roles being John Laurens/Philip Hamilton & Hercules Mulligan/James Madison).

The cast filmed the entirety of the show in their own homes, and Sadie Kate Gibson edited the videos together, along with mixing audio and adding backgrounds. While editing, she faced a huge problem: the hard drive that had every piece of fully edited audio and footage broke. Thanks to Five Star Data Recovery, a lot of it was saved. However, most of it was still yet to be done, and since Sadie had already announced the release date, she only had two weeks to edit the entire production. She ended up getting it done three days before its release. On March 21st, 2021, exactly eight months after work had started, the show was released to the public.
